A skillful, yet anxious, con artist turns her life around to become a community leader, only to find herself running scams again on the Chicago elite to save her community's art center.
We live in a world where White men committing white collar crimes to escape poverty (or continue to avoid at the cost of other peoples' livelihood) often times get slaps on the wrist or even applauded. Those of us that don't fit into that demographic don't have the same fates. We don't have the connections, cushy jobs or fast-talking lawyers, so where does that leave us? Poverty and crime go hand in hand. What happens when we do something bad with good intentions? Certainly not a slap on the wrist for a Black woman. But Black women are resilient and creative. This story is based in the city of Chicago and on 20-somethings (younger millennials) who want to have abundant lives where they give back to their communities. They are enticed by the world of scamming when their efforts to do the right thing fall flat. 'Burning Sage' highlights discrepancies in the distribution of wealth, how that affects the decisions of people in dire need, and touches on how we might be the one thing that we’re afraid of. Think White Collar and The Blacklist with a sprinkle of some Black Girl Magic. Burning Sage is full of thrills, drama, a splash of comedy, and of course, some toxic behavior that all of our therapists are trying to conjure out of us.
Supporting ‘Burning Sage’ actually supports women and Black/brown independent filmmakers in Chicago. It brings more stories of people that look like us to larger audiences and keeps members of our communities fulfilled/enhancing their resumes. Donating will also provide YOU with a tax incentive due to the generous fiscal sponsorship of Illinois Film Alliance. You can find our GiveButter link HERE. We can’t wait to collaborate with you!
